A 'site file' (Bascom Hill Historic District) exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. The Law Building is contributing to the Bascom Hill Historic District, NR listed 1974, NRIS #: 74000065 "Downhill is the Law Building. The law library was built in 1939, with additions in 1960, 1961, and 1968; a front classroom and office section was constructed in 1963 and 1964. The modest modern style of the building was modified to relate visually to its neighbors, South Hall and Music Hall. The old Law Building (1893), a stately but small Romanesque structure, was removed in 1963 to make room for more spacious quarters. In the Burr W. Jones Reading Room of the library is the John Steuart Curry mural "The Freeing of the Slaves." Judge August C. Backus, a Law School graduate and former University regent, donated the funds for the mural so law students could appreciate the history of the Emancipation Proclamation. The cornerstone at the entrance and a stone gargoyle lion on the terrace are from the roof of the original building."
