South Side Historic District Walking Tour Guide: "William and Catherine Richmond built a Greek Revival house on this site about 1851. He was a local banker who served as mayor of Racine in 1852. Between 1855 and 1895, John Conroe and his widow, Mary, lived here. Mr. Conroe owned a hardware store downtown until his death in 1865. Dr. Clarenden Irving Shoop and his wife, Ida, bought the house in 1901. The local architectural firm of Chandler and Park enlarged and remodeled it for them in the Classical Revival Style--essentially as it stands today. Dr. Shoop established a very successful patent medicine business in Racine about 1890. The house it, he built the Shoop Building at 222 Main (in the Old Main Street Historic District). He and Ida lived here until they retired to California about 1921."
