Additional Comments The old Erickson Log barn was built in 1880 as the Melvina School and located where the current Melvina State Graded School building sits along STH 27. The old log building was moved to this location in 1891, when a new school was built. The building is a one-story sturcture constructed of horizontally-laid logs with very little chinking space. The upper portion of the structure is covered with vertical wood siding. The building sits on a stone foundation and has a metal panel roof. Openings are small and crude windows and doors. A shed-roofed addition projects from the east elevation of the building.

It is, though, architecturally significant as a good example of log construction in the area. It is not known who built the school, but it has a high level of log construction, with fitted logs so that it needed little chinking. The corners appear to be dovetailed. It is known that there are many log buildings still extant in southwestern Monroe County, but few are uncovered. Therefore, this building is significant because the log structure can be seen and analyzed as one type of log construction in the area.
