FRENCH PROVINCIAL INFLUENCE.

This two-story, NeoClassical Revival building is finished with red brick and trimmed with smooth-faced stone. The building has a raised basement, with a stone foundation and water table; and a rusticated first story surmounted by a stone belt course. The windows have stone sills; the windows at the second story have quoined surrounds, while those on the first story have flat brick arches. A one-story, pedimented portico marks the front entrance. The portico has Doric columns, an entablature with triglyphs, and a floral motif in the pediment. City Hall has hip-roofed dormers, a Dutch gable parapet above the entrance pavilion on the rear facade, and had a square tower on the hip-with-deck roof. The tower was removed, and the cornice covered over, in 1957 (WIHP). The windows were replaced, over time, between 1987 and 1989 (City of Rhinelander building permits). The Rhinelander City Hall was built in 1908-09 at a cost of $25,000 (History of Lincoln, Oneida and Vilas Counties, p. 118). The City's administrative offices are still in the building.
