One story addition on the north side. Two story addition on the rear. Replacement windows. 418 North Pelham Street Central Elementary School This two-story, cream brick, flat-roofed Art Deco school building was constructed in 1938-39 ("Council Accepts P. W. A. Funds," New North, June 30, 1938.). Slender, two-story pilasters articulate the front facade, giving the school a stream-lined appearance. The coping is enriched with an abstract, geometric design, and there is a curved metal portico at each entrance. At the north end of the building, there is a 1991 addition; it does not compromise the integrity of the Central School. The site was purchased in March 1938, and construction began in August 1938 (Kris Gilbertson, "Central School Built in 1938," Rhinelander Daily News, January 3, 1989). It is still a school. The Central Elementary School is a good local example of an Art Deco school, with good integrity. |
