Additional Comments This large two story late nineteenth century brick Commercial Vernacular building is located in the middle of the 100 block of South Central Avenue. The building houses two symmetrically placed storefront separated by a central entry that gives access to the seven by wide upper story. Both storefronts have been drastically altered and no longer retain their original appearance. The upper story, however, despite the bricking in of the windows, retains the segmental arch lintels and corbelled cornice parapet.

This property is a contributing member of the Marshfield Central Avenue Historic District under Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. It is representative of the Architecture Theme of the Wisconsin Cultural Resource Management Plan as an example of Commercial Vernacular architecture with Italianate details. The building's architectural integrity on the second story is high, while the first story alterations are reflective of continued use and changing stylistic preferences.

Built after the fire of 1887 and before 1891, this building was originally numbered 851 and 852 Central Avenue. In 1891 # 851 was occupied by a store which sold boots and shoes. #852 was occupied by a saloon. By 1898 a general store had replaced the boots and shoes store, and a clothing store had replaced the saloon. At the same time, the addresses were changed from 851 and 852 to 121 and 123 respectively. By 1904 a clothing and boots and shoes store had replaced the general store in #121 and another boots and shoes establishment had replaced the clothing store in #123. A music store occupied #121 and a saloon was in place in #123 by 1912. In 1925, unidentified stores occupied both retail spaces. Between 145 and 147, #121 was renumbered 141. Unidentified stores remained in 141 and 145, and a restaurant occupied #147 in 1946.

This property is a contributing member of the Marshfield Central Avenue Historic District under Criterion A of the National Register of Historic Places. It is representative of the Commerce Theme of the Wisconsin Cultural Resource Management Plan as an example of a retail building providing Goods and Services.
