| Additional Comments | This two story late nineteenth century brick Commercial Vernacular retail building is located toward the center of the 200 block on the east side of South Central Avenue. The street level store front has been alter and includes a large recessed central entry flanked by large plate-glass window bays. A full width transom light may be under the sign panel above the glass storefront. The upper story features corbelling along the cornice and a large centrally located segmentally arched window opening. The opening has been closed in and now houses two modern inappropriately scaled windows. The baseline of the window opening is trimmed with decorative brickwork. This property is a contributing member of the Marshfield Central Avenue Historic District under Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. It is representative of the Architecture Theme of the Wisconsin Cultural Resource Management Plan as an example of Commercial Vernacular architecture with Italianate details. The building's architectural integrity on the second story is high, while the first story alterations are reflective of continued use and changing stylistic preferences. Built between the fire of 1887 and 1891, this building originally housed a saloon. From 1898 through 1904 a tailor shop was located in the building. In 1912 a saloon was located on the first floor and the Elks lodge was located on the second floor. In 1925 and 1946 the building was occupied by an unidentified store. The historic address of this property was 209 South Central Avenue. In 1946 it was changed to 217 South Central Avenue. This property is a contributing member of the Marshfield Central Avenue Historic District under Criterion A of the National Register of Historic Places. It is representative of the Commerce Theme of the Wisconsin Cultural Resource Management Plan as an example of a retail building providing Goods and Services. |
