A 'site file' exists for this property. (Main Street Historic District) It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. Architectural Description: This residence is the only remaining one of its kind facing Main Street from the river to the railroad tracks. The main block is two stories tall with a lenght of three bays on the facade and a width of five bays on the side. The house is similar in scale to the commercial buildings near it. Simple Italianate details are evident on this two story multi-hipped building, as are later applied Period Revival "Colonial" details. The wide entablature under the eaves and the simple projecting lintels and sills are indicative of the Italianate influence. The "Colonial" is manifested in the door hood and side lights on the secondary entrance. Between 1884 and 1887, the southeast section was increased from one to two stories. In that same time period, a front (north elevation) porch was added. [B]. The porch was removed sometime after 1926. [B]. The windows appear to have retained their original two-over-two double-hung wood sash. The dwelling, having been constructed by the year 1884, is in good condition. Architectural Significance: This property would be a contributing feature to the Main Street Commercial District as representation of the only residential building remaining in the commercial core of Stoughton which faces Main Street. Historical Background: The 1884 Sanborn Insurance Map, the earliest for Stoughton, shows a frame boarding house on the site. [B]. The city directory from two years before indicates that Mrs. Julia Miller ran the boarding house, which was one of four at the time. [C]. Mrs. Clara E. Knight ran the boarding house in 1904. [A]. The building is depicted on the Sanborn maps as a boarding house until the 1912 map when it is listed as a dewlling. [B]. Historical Significance: This property is significant as a Boarding House under Criterion A as an example of the Goods and Services element of the Commerce Theme for Stoughton. It is the only remaining house facing Main Street, and while residential in nature, was a commercial entriprise in fact. It is not known whether this building was constructed as a boarding house, or if such use was an adaptation when the commercial area of the community began to surround the property.
