This is a two and one-half story, gabled hip-roofed, frame, Queen Anne style house with architecturaly developed elevations facing both south and east. This well articulated example of one of the most popular house types of its era features many picturesque elements intended to disguise its basically boxy shape including bay windows, a massive story and a half tall staircase oriel, jettied gables, a 3-story polygonal corner tower with a bellcast faceted roof and a wide wrap-around porch with Tuscan columns. This structure contributes to the significance of the Appleton City Park Historic District under Criterion C as a fine example of a well preserved late Queen Anne style ilustrating the Free Classic phase of the style. This imposing, architect-designed residence exmeplifies the fine late picturesque dwellings favored by Appleton's affluent families in the later 1890s and early 1900s. |
