In 1883 P. Phillips built a brick residence on Second Street. Brick houses in New Richmond are rare. This is the only brick house on Second Street. It is possible that a brick house had been elsewhere on Second Street and torn down at some point, but because of the scarcity of brick residences it is unlikely this occured. It would have meant 2 brick h ouses on one street. Also, in size and massing this house resembles one at 222 W. 1st Street (See SC20-1), that was built around 1884-1887.
An 1897 plat map shows a Pat Phillips with a home at this spot.
Phillips wsa born in Sligo County Ireland in March 1828 and came to Canada with his family in 1846. A carpenter, he settled in Erin Prairie in 1865 and Richmond in 1866. He farmed there until the 1880's. He moved into the city and built the Phillips block on Main (Knowles). This was lost in the tornado and rebuilt after. In 1871 he had married Bridget McConaghy of Canada. They had three children. Phillips was a democrat and catholic.
