Another map code is 4/20, found on the DOT map. Built in 1903 [1], this two and one half story house was designed in the Queen Anne and Colonial revival styles. It features an irregular shaped plan configuration, a granite stone and fieldstone foundation, and an asphalt shingled gable roof with a dormer. The exterior materials include clapboard, wood shingles and pebbledash, while the trim materials include wood, brick and concrete. A Bernaise roof line distinguishes each side elevation. The residence is in excellent condition. A related building is a garage. Architectural/Engineering Significance: This structure contributes to the significance of the Nathan Strong Park Historic District under Criterion C as a well preserved example of a turn-of-the century house illustrating the transition from the picutresque Queen Anne style to the simpler stylistic residential archtiecture of the early 20th century. The rather peculiar appearance of the facade is the result of the replacement of the original much wider front porch with the present small porch. Historical Background: Edward G. Longcroft was born in Elgin, IL in 1854 and moved to Berlin in 1865. He learned the jewelry trade while working for D. J. Turner and later, S. G. Rosencrans, who both ran stores in Berlin. in 1876, Mr. Longcroft opened his own jewelry store on Huron Street and he sold all kinds of jewelry, watches and clocks. [2]. Later he went into the sale of musical instruments, victrolias, records and sheet music. [1]. He was married in 1878 to Minnie A. Smith, daughter of S.J. R. Smith of Berlin. [2]. This house was built in 1903 by Mr. Longcroft and it remained with the family until 1965, when it was sold to Robert Swan. [1].
