Madison Saddlery Company Listed in the National Register of Historic Places
For Immediate Release (November 11, 2022)
Madison, Dane County WI. - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Madison Saddlery Company in the National Register of Historic Places on November 3, 2022.
The Madison Saddlery Company was a regional distributor of leather goods and was once the only business of its kind located in the city of Madison. Owned by Carl Hoebel, he constructed this building in 1907 as its primary manufacturing, warehouse and sales facility. It is a distinguished example of an industrial loft, with only a few remaining in Madison that are still intact.
Designed by Alvan Small in a combination of Romanesque and early 20th Century Commercial styles, it is four stories tall with wood-frame construction and a masonry exterior that is highlighted by large open spaces on each floor and decorative window bays adorning the primary façade. Due to the rise of the automobile, the Great Depression, and Hoebel’s death, the business shut down in 1929. Since then, it has been used by grocers, wholesale hardware companies and a long-standing local furniture store.
