Milwaukee, WI. - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Underwriters Exchange Building in Milwaukee (Milwaukee County) on the State Register of Historic Places. State Historic Preservation Officer Daina Penkiunas presents a certificate to Michael McQuillen.

The Underwriters Exchange Building is notable for its association with the development of insurance exchange buildings during the early twentieth century. The building at 828 North Broadway in Milwaukee was built as part of a national trend for buildings in which insurance firms could be centered. When completed in 1924, more than 40 insurance firms had leased offices in this newly established “community center for insurance men.”

The Underwriters Exchange Building served as a center of insurance activity into the 1950s. Despite changes in occupancy, the building retains many of its original finishes and features including wood and terrazzo flooring, ornamental plaster crown molding within the building lobby, and marble stairs adjoining the lobby.

The State Register is Wisconsin's official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin's heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and National Register in Wisconsin.
