Bevel Gear

Three men with bevel gear and pinion that was later used in a Rotary Hearth Furnace drive. This gear was purchased by Surface Comb. Division of Midland Ross and used by the National Steel Company. Falk caption reads, "Segment approximately 8 feet long, 7 inches high with 26 bevel cast teeth having a 7 inch face and 3.8 circumference pitch. Pinion approximately 21 1/2 O.D. and 15 cut bevel teeth with 9 inch face. 30 segments make one 80 foot diameter. Bevel gear ring in mesh with 3 pinions transmitting 25 HP, each at 90 feet per minute. Total of 780 teeth in gear, 3.8 inch circumference pitch x 7 inch face. 15 cast teeth x 9 inch face in pinion. The rotary furnace, 100 feet O.D. and 60 feet I.D. is driven by 3 2090 Y3 units through footing shaft, "P" type couplings connected to the bevel pinions." The men in the photograph are Frank Rinker, Chief Engineer of Minerals Processing, and Jim Gill and Art Keel, both Project Engineers.
