A hand-colored lithograph, produced by Wm. E. Hitchcock, of the male, left, and female Japanese green pheasant, identified as Plate 1 - Ornithology. The image was created from the drawings of William Heine, who collected specimens of the bird in Japan while a member of Commodore Perry's Expedition of 1854-1855. "Vieillot" refers the the French ornithologist Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot (1748-1831) who named the species in 1825.
