Ixos Haemorrhous

A bird, identified as Ixos haemorrhous, perches on a small branch. The hand-colored lithograph was produced by Wm. E. Hitchcock from William Heine's drawings of an adult male specimen collected near Macao (now Macau) China on Commodore Perry's Expedition. "Gmelin" refers to German naturalist Johann Freidrich Gmelin who assigned the scientific name. This name is no longer in use, and the bird is most likely a sooty headed bulbul, Pycnonotus aurigaster.
