Oliver Marcy, Naturalist

Carte-de-visite portrait of Oliver Marcy (1820-1899), American educator and natural scientist. In 1862, he became professor and chair of the natural history department at Northwestern University. From 1876 to 1881, and again in 1890, he served as President of the University. In 1866, he served as a geologist on a government survey expedition from Lewiston, Idaho, to Virginia City, Montana. In 1871, he founded the Northwestern Museum of Natural History, where he served as curator until his death.
