| Additional Comments | Projecting cornice ornamented by medillion brackets and visually supported by large brackets; white metal keystone accented stone segmental artches over recessed graying of these windows and a similar round arched window with a sunburst tympanum design int he narrow central bay artculates the five bay facade. Terra cotta panels above and below the third story windows; white stone belt courses and accents; window lintels on 2nd story; store front completely altered for contemporary use. Iron pilaster mullions remain on 3rd story windows. #650: 135 and 203 South 4th Street. The original alrge iron cornice and round pediment was removed when the abbreviated fourth floor and the new less ornate cornice was added in the early 1990s to the Doerre=Tausche Building, used to house the Tausche Hardware Company until 1970, is the earliest elaborate building on South Fourth Street still retaining its elaborate polychromatic Victorian facade. This was built as a 3 story iron clad building with brick underneath. In 1887, there was a hardware store on the 1st and 2nd floors and the third floor was vacant. A two story stable sood in the back. In 1891, a one story addition stood on the front fourth of the north side of the building where the 135 South 4th Street addition now stands. By 1906 the fourth story has been added and the addition at 135 South 4th is built. the two buildings are connected, with the only rear entrance in the 201 South 4th street building. By 1956, 135, 201 and 203 South 4th Street all are connected. |
