| Additional Comments | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the State Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. Parapet with recessed panels and corbeling; segmental arch window lintels with corbel stops; dog tooth brick wall and corbeling between floors; first floor store front altered. Dave Dulberg (1993) recalls that Economy Hardware occupied the building. About 1983, George Fravail expanded his saloon into this building. The building is not present on the 1882 bird's eye view (Stoner). John A. Bryan operated a butcher shop by 1870 (Chapin 1870). He owned the property at 119 E. Cook from 1868 through 1904 and presumably ran his business in the building on the property which was replaced between 1882 and 1885. By 1908 through 1910, John A. Bryan had moved to 109 E. Cook (56/9) and purchased that building during that interval. By 1911-1912, he relocated into his new building at 111 E. Cook (57/8). He remained in business through 1914. Joseph H. Bryan ran a meat market by 1908 adjacent to the harness shop of William Bunker in 121-133 E. Cook (56/3). He had been in business at a different address on the north side of Cook since at least 1884 (Wright 1890). By 1910, he moved the business to 119 E. Cook, and it was then operated by Joseph H. and Harry Bryan, as Bryan and Son as a grocery and meat market. Joseph H. Bryan remained in business until at least 1917 and owned 119 E. Cook through 1930. By 1927 through 1929, the business operated under the name of Bryan and Bryan and included Harry and John. By 1948 through 1955, the Economy Store, a hardware, located in the building. |
