A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. This one-story, vernacular depot is located at the Winneconne Historical Society Museum Complex at the southwest corner of West Main Street and North 6th Street. The depot is one of five buildings comprising the complex. Erected in 1871, the depot faces west and is oriented parallel to West Main Street. It rises from a newer concrete foundation, is finished with clapboard, and has a standing seam metal roof. Wide eaves and exposed rafters embellish the otherwise vernacular building. The fenestration throughout the building includes six-over-six and fixed windows. An open, wooden deck extends across the east, south and west-facing facades. The interior is divided into a passenger waiting area, office, and baggage room. The waiting room comprises the eastern half of the building. The western half is divided into an office and baggage room. The floorplan and building materials retain a high degree of integrity. The Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway began service to Winneconne in 1868. The first depot was constructed that year, but shortly thereafter, destroyed by fire. This edifice was constructed in its place in 1871 . In 1968 it was purchased by the Winneconne Historical Society and moved to its current location. |
